1. Core Criteria for Being a “Survivor”
Players are invited because they have:
- Survived a major medical event, such as a traumatic brain injury, cancer, stroke, spinal injury, or another life‑threatening/ altering condition.
- Survived a major mental health crisis. Experiences can differ, but this weekend’s theme is mental health awareness.
- Demonstrated resilience and recovery Many have relearned basic skills like walking, talking, or skating.
- Connection to the hockey community Survivors are often players, coaches, family members, supporters, or playing in someone’s behalf.
- A story that inspires others DAWG Nation highlights individuals whose journeys embody courage and perseverance.
This isn’t about competition—it’s about honoring personal struggles and celebrating victories.
2. How the Game Works
- It’s played during the Gateway Dawg Bowl IV weekend at the Maryville University Hockey Center
- The hope to have the arena packed—standing room only.
- Each survivor is introduced one by one, often greeted with heartfelt applause.
- The game features:
- The ceremonial dropping of the puck
- Special jerseys
- A lively, feel-good hockey game where goals are cheered, but the real emphasis is on enjoyment and camaraderie.
- The vibe is purposefully warm, upbeat, and centered around community.
3. Purpose of the Survivor Game
- Raise awareness (e.g., traumatic brain injury awareness in 2025)
- Honor survivors and their families
- Showcase that “Hockey Heals”
- Raise funds for individuals facing medical or financial hardship
- Unite the hockey community in compassion and celebration
4. Want to Nominate Someone
- DAWG Nation accepts nominations for individuals in need through their foundation. Survivors are typically chosen from:
- Past or current DAWG Nation recipients or members of the Hockey Heals program
- Community nominations
- Individuals with compelling stories of recovery
- We’re currently accepting nominations or applications for this year’s Survivor game.
