His vision began to fade in his mid‑30s, the result of retinitis pigmentosa and a detached retina — a diagnosis that slowly dimmed the world around him. As his sight deteriorated, so did his sense of purpose, and the depression that followed eventually pulled him away from the game he loved most: hockey.
But his story didn’t end there.
Refusing to let vision loss define his future, he found his way back to the ice through Hockey Heals and The Dented Puck Foundation and ultimately earned a place on the US National Blind Hockey team. Returning to the sport reignited something powerful — not just his athletic drive, but his confidence, his community, and his belief in what’s possible.
Hockey didn’t just come back into his life. It transformed it, opening doors, creating opportunities, and reminding him that even when the world grows darker, the human spirit can shine brighter than ever.
