Gary Woolard is the kind of athlete who refuses to accept limits — even when life, doctors, and circumstance try to hand them to him.
In 2014, Gary underwent a left hip resurfacing procedure, a surgery serious enough that his doctor advised him to hang up his skates for good. Instead, Gary laced them back up in 59 days, proving that determination can be stronger than prognosis.
During that same recovery, doctors noticed a dark spot on Gary’s upper arm. A biopsy revealed Stage 2 melanoma, one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer. On June 25th, surgeons removed the cancerous area and a lymph node to check for spread. Days later, while standing in a cemetery of all places, Gary received the call every patient hopes for — they got it all, and there was no spread. He has remained cancer‑free ever since.
In 2021, while playing in the Scott Hockey League, Gary suffered a STEMI heart attack — one of the most dangerous types. He fought his way back once again, making a full recovery and returning to the sport he loves.
By 2023, Gary faced yet another challenge: bi‑lateral total knee replacements. And once again, the same orthopedic doctor told him his time as a goalie was over. But Gary’s story has never been about accepting “no.” Eleven months later, he was back on the ice, skating with a group of players who participate in the ECHL.
Today, Gary is a proud and active member of the DAWG Nation Hockey Heals community, showing up week after week with the same grit, heart, and passion that have carried him through every setback.
Gary Woolard doesn’t just play hockey. He embodies resilience. He proves that the human spirit — when fueled by love for the game and belief in oneself — can overcome anything.
