Jonny O’s DAWG Nation Winter Classic 2025

Theme

This year’s Winter Classic celebrated the spirit of inclusion under the theme “Hockey Is for Everyone.” Thanks to the incredible support of the hockey community, the event was a tremendous success — raising awareness and funds for programs that make the game accessible to all.

Throughout the weekend, DAWG Nation proudly presented donations to several inspiring organizations:

• St. Louis Blues Special Hockey – $2,000
• St. Louis Blues Warriors – $2,000
• St. Louis Blues Blind Hockey Club – $2,000
• DASA Carschield Sled Hockey – $2,000

Each check represented more than just financial support — it symbolized the shared belief that hockey truly is for everyone. From sled hockey players to blind and adaptive athletes, every participant reminded us that the game’s greatest strength lies in its community.

Dean Robinson

It was a wonderful weekend filled with unforgettable moments. We had the honor of meeting Dean Robinson and providing fundraising support, wrapping up our efforts on Saturday. Most importantly, thanks to Hockey Heals and the strength of our hockey community, Dean made his inspiring return to the ice. We were proud to stand with the Robinson family and look forward to continuing that connection in the months ahead.

David B. Heath Award

Rick and Riley

If you were around the Steinberg Skating Rink over the weekend, you may have crossed paths with Rick and Riley Alire. The father‑and‑son duo traveled from Colorado, as they do every year, to volunteer at the Jonny O’s tournament and share DAWG Nation’s message of healing, community, and togetherness. This year, we were proud to honor them with the David B. Heath Hard Hat Volunteer Award.

Our chapter’s co‑founder, Matt Heath, is the son of David Heath, who passed away in 2017 after his second battle with colon cancer. This award carries David’s legacy forward by recognizing those who give their time, energy, and heart to lift others. Rick and Riley embodied that spirit all weekend long.

Dented Pucks

Our friends from the Dented Puck Foundation made their annual trip to St. Louis over the weekend. If you’re unfamiliar with the Jonny O’s Tournament or DAWG Nation, the Dented Pucks are a traveling blind hockey team dedicated to growing the sport and raising awareness for blind and visually impaired athletes.

We also witnessed something truly special. Kevin Papproth, from the Metro East area, joined the team for the event. Kevin experienced significant vision loss later in life and, not knowing blind hockey existed, had stepped away from the game he loved. When one of our DAWG Nation members shared Kevin’s story, Josh Schneider — captain of the Dented Pucks and a member of the U.S. Blind Hockey Team — immediately reached out and invited him to play.

Kevin received a warm welcome, fit right in, and helped the team reach the championship game on Sunday in their division. A jersey presentation on Saturday formally welcomed him to the team, marking a powerful moment for everyone involved.

This weekend perfectly illustrated our shared mission: Hockey Is for Everyone. We’re excited about this new connection and eager to see where Kevin’s journey — and this partnership — leads next.
